Overview

Material UI is an open-source React library that implements Google's Material Design, with history back to 2014. It ships styled components ready for production, a theme system, layout primitives and Emotion-based styling, and is used alongside MUI System. MUI's January 2026 update said Joy UI is on hold, Pigment CSS development is paused, and new Material UI components are being built on Base UI.

In April 2026 MUI released Material UI v9 and MUI X v9 together, skipping v8 so both lines share one major version. v9 brought NumberField and Menubar, accessibility and keyboard fixes, and theme updates using color-mix() for derived colors. MUI says the next major will explore removing the Emotion dependency and better Tailwind integration.

MUI X is the commercial side: Data Grid, Charts, Date and Time Pickers, Tree View, and new Scheduler and Chat components in alpha. Each has an MIT version and Pro or Premium features that require a licence key; without one, commercial features show an unlicensed watermark. Commercial components send telemetry in development mode by default (off in production), with an opt-out.
