Minimal Node.js web framework · by OpenJS Foundation (Express project)

Express

The long-standing minimal web framework for Node.js: routing, middleware and HTTP helpers, with the largest ecosystem of third-party middleware in JavaScript.

Overview

Express is the classic Node.js web framework: a router, a middleware pipeline and helpers for redirects, caching headers, content negotiation and templates. It deliberately stays small and unopinionated, so there is no built-in ORM, validation layer or project structure; you pick libraries for those.

Its main advantage is reach. Almost every Node tutorial, auth library and hosting guide covers Express, it supports more than 14 template engines, and frameworks such as NestJS use it as their default HTTP layer. The original author was TJ Holowaychuk; today a Technical Committee governs the project, which works alongside the OpenJS Foundation.

Express 5 is the current major line. It requires Node.js 18 or newer and removes deprecated methods such as app.del() and the singular req.acceptsCharset(), so an Express 4 app may not run unchanged. The project publishes codemods that automate most of the migration.

In throughput comparisons published by Fastify and Elysia, Express is among the slower Node frameworks. For most CRUD apps the database dominates, but high-throughput services often choose Fastify or Hono instead.

§3

What it does

Routing
Method and path routing with routers that can be mounted and nested.
Middleware
A simple request, response, next pipeline used by thousands of third-party packages.
Template engines
Supports 14+ view engines through consolidate.
HTTP helpers
Redirection, caching headers, content negotiation and static files.
Migration codemods
Official codemods update Express 4 code for Express 5.
§4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Largest middleware ecosystem and most documentation of any Node framework
  • Stable API that most Node developers already know
  • Governed by a technical committee rather than one company
  • Works with any ORM, validator or template engine

Limitations

  • Node.js only; it does not run on edge runtimes such as Cloudflare Workers
  • No built-in validation, schema, typing or structure; TypeScript types come from the separate @types/express package
  • Express 5 breaks compatibility with Express 4 and requires Node.js 18+
  • Lower throughput than Fastify, Hono or Elysia in their published benchmarks
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • Learning server-side JavaScript
  • APIs that rely on existing Express middleware
  • Teams maintaining large existing Express codebases

Look elsewhere if

  • Edge or serverless platforms without Node APIs
  • Teams wanting built-in validation, DI and structure

Pricing history

  • 31 Mar 2025

Express 5.1 becomes the default npm version; Express 4 enters maintenance

On 31 March 2025 Express 5.1.0 was tagged latest on npm, ending the v4 default. The project published an LTS policy: v4 moved to maintenance on 1 April 2025 with end of life no sooner than 1 October 2026. Source ↗

Questions

Is Express still maintained?

Yes. A Technical Committee maintains it and Express 5 is the current major version.

Does Express support TypeScript?

You can use it from TypeScript with the community @types/express package; types are not bundled.

Should I use Express or Fastify?

Fastify is faster in its benchmarks and has built-in schema validation; Express has the larger ecosystem and more familiar API.

What Node version does Express 5 need?

Node.js 18 or higher.
