Distributed object storage · by Storj Labs

Storj

S3-compatible object storage that erasure-codes data across thousands of independent nodes worldwide, at $7 per TB stored and $7 per TB of egress.

§1

Overview

Storj is a distributed cloud: instead of running its own data centers for every byte, it encrypts each object, splits it with erasure coding and spreads the pieces across tens of thousands of independent storage nodes around the world. Clients reach it through an S3-compatible gateway or native tools, and Storj states 11 nines of durability.

Since 1 July 2026 pricing has two tiers. Standard costs $7 per TB-month for storage and $7 per TB for egress, globally distributed. Advanced costs $10 per TB-month and keeps data in US data centers that are SOC 2 Type 2 audited, also with $7/TB egress. There are no API fees and segment fees have been dropped for the new tiers.

Three rules matter for small or churny workloads: a $5 minimum monthly charge, a 30-day minimum retention (early deletes are billed for the remainder), and a 50 KB minimum billable object size. A 30-day free trial needs no credit card.

Storj also sells Object Mount, a client that mounts any S3 storage as a local file system, aimed at media teams. Each account includes two free licences.

Pricing and plans

Plan Price What you get
Free trial $0 for 30 days No card required; 2 free Object Mount licences
Standard $7/TB-month Globally distributed; egress $7/TB; 30-day minimum retention; 50 KB minimum object size
Advanced $10/TB-month Stored in US SOC 2 Type 2 data centers; egress $7/TB
Object Mount Teams $29/mo per licence Mount storage as a file system; includes 500 GB of Storj storage

The pricing page states a $5 minimum monthly fee that is a floor, not a usage credit (accounts paying in STORJ tokens and custom contracts are exempt). A Storj community-forum post in June 2026 said the paid-account minimum would rise to $50 from 1 July 2026, which conflicts with the $5 on the pricing page read today; confirm before signing up. Objects deleted within 30 days are billed for the rest of the 30 days (Object Mount usage exempt). Legacy plans may still carry segment fees. Accounts with a $0 balance and no stored data are suspended and deleted. The SOC 2 Type 2 claim applies to the Advanced tier's data centers. No EU-only storage option was listed on the pages read.

§3

What it does

Distributed architecture
Encrypted, erasure-coded pieces are spread across tens of thousands of storage locations.
No API fees
Only storage and egress are billed on the new tiers.
Advanced tier
Regionally placed storage in US SOC 2 Type 2 data centers for compliance needs.
Object Mount
Access buckets as a local file system on Mac, Windows and Linux; two free licences per account.
S3 compatibility
Works as a drop-in replacement for S3 with existing S3 apps.
§4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Low egress at $7 per TB
  • No API request fees
  • Globally distributed storage with 11 nines durability
  • Free 30-day trial without a card

Limitations

  • $5 minimum monthly fee after the trial
  • 30-day minimum retention on the Standard tier
  • Objects under 50 KB are billed as 50 KB
  • Standard storage at $7/TB-month is above Backblaze B2 and IDrive e2 list prices
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • Media and large-file workflows with global teams
  • Backups and archives with moderate egress
  • Teams wanting distributed rather than single-datacenter storage

Look elsewhere if

  • Many tiny or short-lived objects
  • Data that must stay in the EU
