§1

Overview

Backblaze B2 is object storage from the company known for its consumer backup service and hard-drive failure reports. There is one storage class, always hot, priced at $6.95 per TB per month on pay-as-you-go, billed by the byte-hour. There is no minimum object size and no minimum storage duration, so short-lived and small files are not penalised the way they are on archive tiers elsewhere.

Egress is free up to three times your average stored data each month, and beyond that costs $0.01 per GB. Downloads through partner CDNs and compute providers (Cloudflare, Fastly, bunny.net, CacheFly, Vultr, CoreWeave and others) are free without limit, which makes B2 plus a CDN a common cheap setup for public files. Since 1 May 2026 standard API calls are free too.

The first 10 GB of storage is free, so small projects can run at no cost. Larger customers can buy annual capacity (B2 Reserve, from 20 TB) or B2 Overdrive, a high-throughput tier from $15/TB with unlimited free egress that requires a multi-petabyte commitment.

B2 offers both its own native API and an S3-compatible API, plus Object Lock for immutable backups and hundreds of integrations with backup and media tools.

First 10 GB of storage always free

At the limit Not stated The vendor does not say what happens at the limit, or we have not found it yet.

Plan Price What you get
B2 pay as you go $6.95/TB-month Billed monthly by byte-hour; free egress up to 3x average storage, then $0.01/GB
B2 Reserve Custom Annual capacity bundles from 20 TB, usually through resellers
B2 Overdrive From $15/TB-month High-throughput storage with unlimited free egress; multi-petabyte commitment

Pay-as-you-go storage rose from $6/TB to $6.95/TB on 1 May 2026, when standard API calls also became free. The pricing page still mentions Class D transactions at $0.004 per 10,000 after 2,500 free a day, while Backblaze's March 2026 announcement says only Event Notifications transactions remain charged; check the current rate page for Class D. Whether a card is needed to sign up is not stated. Accounts choose one region at sign-up (US West, US East, EU Central in Amsterdam, or CA East in Toronto) and cannot change it later; the storage price is the same in every region.

§4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Low, flat storage price with no tiers to manage
  • Free egress up to 3x storage and unlimited through partner CDNs
  • No minimum storage duration or object size charges
  • First 10 GB free, suitable for hobby projects
  • Free API calls since May 2026

Limitations

  • Egress beyond 3x average storage is billed at $0.01/GB unless it goes through a partner
  • Only one storage class, so no cheaper archive tier for cold data
  • B2 Overdrive and its unlimited egress need a multi-petabyte commitment
  • Each account's region (US West, US East, EU Central, CA East) is fixed at sign-up and cannot be changed
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • Backups and archives
  • Media libraries served through Cloudflare or bunny.net
  • Budget application storage
  • Moving data out of hyperscalers to cut costs

Look elsewhere if

  • Workloads that download many times their stored volume each month without a partner CDN
  • Teams needing tight integration with a hyperscaler's compute and IAM
