SolidStart

Meta-framework for SolidJS with CSR, SSR and SSG; v2 (August 2026) moved to Vite and Nitro v3, but the Solid team is retiring it in favour of Solid 2.0's built-in start mode.

Overview

SolidStart is the meta-framework for SolidJS. It supports client-side rendering, server-side rendering (sync, async and streaming) and static generation, with isomorphic nested routing, server functions, a CLI with templates and deployment presets for Netlify, Vercel, AWS, Cloudflare and Node. It deliberately ships no router or metadata library of its own, leaving those choices to you.

SolidStart v2 became stable on 4 August 2026. It replaces Vinxi with direct use of Vite's Environment API and Nitro v3, requires Node.js 24+ and Vite 8, and changes the default serialisation to JSON. Most v1 apps move their app.config.ts settings into vite.config.ts following the migration guide.

The bigger news came on 12 August 2026: the Solid 2.0 release candidate moved server functions into core and added a start mode to @solidjs/vite-plugin that covers serving, file routing and SSR. The Solid team wrote that start mode replaces SolidStart and that there will be no SolidStart 3.0; existing apps keep working and get maintenance releases. New projects should weigh Solid 2.0's start mode instead.

§3

What it does

Fine-grained reactivity
Solid updates only the DOM nodes that depend on changed signals, with no virtual DOM.
Multiple rendering modes
CSR, SSR (sync, async, streaming) and SSG from one project.
Server functions
Isomorphic code with "use server" functions callable from components.
Deployment presets
Nitro presets for Netlify, Vercel, AWS, Cloudflare and Node servers.
§4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Solid's runtime performance with a full-stack setup.
  • v2 sits directly on Vite 8 and Nitro v3, so Vite and Nitro plugins work without a Vinxi layer.
  • Unopinionated about router and metadata libraries.

Limitations

  • Being retired: the Solid team says start mode in Solid 2.0 replaces SolidStart and only maintenance releases will follow.
  • SolidStart v2 is built for Solid v1, not Solid 2.0.
  • v2 requires Node.js 24 or newer and Vite 8.
  • Documentation for SolidStart is still marked as beta and incomplete.
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • Existing SolidStart v1 apps upgrading to a Vite-native base
  • Developers who want Solid's reactivity on the server today

Look elsewhere if

  • New Solid projects starting after Solid 2.0 (use start mode)
  • Teams that need a large component ecosystem

Questions

Is SolidStart deprecated?

The Solid 2.0 RC post (August 2026) says start mode replaces SolidStart and there will be no 3.0; existing SolidStart apps keep working and receive maintenance releases.

What changed in SolidStart v2?

Vinxi was replaced by Vite's Environment API and Nitro v3; it needs Node.js 24+ and Vite 8, and configuration moves from app.config.ts to vite.config.ts.

Where can SolidStart deploy?

Through Nitro presets to Node servers, Netlify, Vercel, AWS and Cloudflare, among others.
