Overview

VitePress is a static site generator from the Vue ecosystem, started in 2020 as a spiritual successor to VuePress and built on Vite. It takes Markdown, applies a theme and produces static HTML that can be deployed anywhere. Its default theme targets technical documentation and is used by Vite, Rollup, Pinia, VueUse, Vitest, D3 and others; the Vue docs use VitePress with a custom theme.

Developer experience is the focus: instant dev server start, edits reflected in under 100 ms, built-in Markdown extensions for code blocks, and Vue-enhanced Markdown where every page is a Vue component. Data-loading APIs can generate routes from local or remote data, as long as it is known at build time, so it also works for blogs, portfolios and marketing sites.

Pages load as pre-rendered HTML and then hydrate into a Vue single-page app, so later navigation does not reload the page. The trade-off is that each site ships the Vue runtime, and anything dynamic must be determined at build time or fetched on the client.

What it does

Markdown-centric
Frontmatter, tables, syntax highlighting and advanced code-block features built in.
Vue in Markdown
Each page is a Vue SFC, so you can use Vue components and templating in content.
Default docs theme
Ready-made theme for technical documentation; fully custom themes are possible.
Data loading
Load local or remote data and generate routes dynamically at build time.
Vite plugins
Use the Vite plugin ecosystem directly.
§4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Very fast development loop thanks to Vite.
  • Proven on major open-source docs sites.
  • Simple setup for Markdown-heavy projects.

Limitations

  • Content must be known at build time; no per-request server rendering.
  • Ships a Vue SPA runtime, heavier than zero-JS generators.
  • Customisation beyond the default theme requires Vue knowledge.
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • Library and tool documentation
  • Vue teams writing docs or blogs
  • Small marketing sites built from Markdown

Look elsewhere if

  • Dynamic, per-request pages
  • React teams (Docusaurus or Starlight)
