Overview
Akamai Cloud, the former Linode, sells S3-compatible Object Storage at a flat $5 a month. That includes 250 GB of storage, and enabling the service adds 1 TB to your account's monthly transfer pool, which is shared with your Linode compute instances. Extra storage costs $0.02 per GB, and transfer beyond the pool costs $0.005 per GB in most locations, among the cheapest egress overage rates of any general cloud.
There are currently no charges for API requests. Akamai is transparent that it is considering per-request pricing for its newer E3 endpoints, which support up to 20,000 requests per second per bucket, but says such charges will not appear on invoices before 1 October 2027.
Billing is tied to the service being enabled rather than to buckets existing: once you enable Object Storage, the $5 applies until you cancel it. Usage is prorated, so enabling it for half a month costs $2.50.
It is a natural companion to Linode compute, using the same account, transfer pool and regions, and a reasonable standalone choice for small to medium datasets where a flat, predictable bill matters more than a free tier.
Pricing and plans
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Object Storage | $5/mo | 250 GB storage; 1 TB added to the account's global transfer pool; prorated |
| Extra storage | $0.02/GB-month | $0.024 in Jakarta, $0.028 in São Paulo |
| Transfer overage | $0.005/GB | $0.015 in Jakarta, $0.007 in São Paulo |
What it does
- Flat monthly rate
- $5 covers 250 GB of storage and adds 1 TB of transfer to the account pool.
- Shared transfer pool
- The 1 TB allowance joins the global pool used by Linode compute, and overage is $0.005/GB.
- No request fees
- API requests are currently free on all endpoint types; deletes are always free.
- E3 endpoints
- Newer endpoints support up to 20,000 requests per second per bucket and up to 1 Tbps throughput.
- S3-compatible API
- Works with standard S3 SDKs and tools.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Very cheap transfer overage at $0.005/GB
- No request fees today
- Simple $5 bundle with prorated billing
- Shares a transfer pool with Linode compute
Limitations
- The $5 fee applies while the service is enabled, even with no buckets
- Per-request charges for E3 endpoints may be introduced from October 2027
- Higher storage and transfer prices in Jakarta and São Paulo
- No permanent free tier
Who it suits
Good for
- Apps running on Linode/Akamai compute
- Download-heavy sites needing cheap egress overage
- Small teams wanting a flat monthly bill
Look elsewhere if
- Hobby projects wanting free storage
- Multi-terabyte archives where per-TB providers cost less

Questions
How much does Linode Object Storage cost?
$5 a month including 250 GB of storage and 1 TB of transfer; extra storage is $0.02/GB and extra transfer $0.005/GB in most data centers.
Does Akamai Object Storage charge for requests?
Not currently. Akamai may add per-request charges for E3 endpoints, but not before 1 October 2027.
How do I stop being billed for Linode Object Storage?
Cancel Object Storage on the account; deleting buckets alone does not stop the $5 flat rate.
Is Linode Object Storage S3 compatible?
Yes. It exposes an S3-compatible API.
