Overview

Vultr is a US cloud provider offering virtual machines, bare metal and GPU servers from 33 regions, including locations in South America, Africa, the Middle East, India, Japan and Korea. Its Cloud Compute line uses shared vCPUs in three tiers: Regular Performance (older Intel CPUs, SSD), High Performance (newer AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon, NVMe) and High Frequency (3 GHz+ Intel).

The newer VX1 line provides dedicated vCPUs in general-purpose and memory-optimized shapes, booting from block storage or local NVMe and billed on hours actually used. Every plan includes a bandwidth allowance, from 0.5 TB on the smallest instance to 15 TB on larger ones.

Vultr is a good pick when location matters: a $5 to $6 server can run in São Paulo, Johannesburg or Seoul. You can also boot a custom ISO, bring your own IP space over BGP and use the API or Terraform provider. Managed databases, Kubernetes, load balancers and object storage are available as separate products.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • One of the widest region lists among VPS providers, useful for latency-sensitive apps.
  • Very low entry price, including an IPv6-only option.
  • Bandwidth included in every plan and hourly billing.
  • Custom ISOs, BGP and bare metal for more unusual setups.

Limitations

  • Regular Performance plans run on previous-generation Intel CPUs and plain SSD.
  • The $2.50 plan is IPv6 only, which some services and users cannot reach.
  • VX1 plans are not capped at a monthly price, so an always-on instance bills every hour of the month.
  • Overage bandwidth pricing is not listed on the main pricing page.
