Overview

Linode, one of the oldest developer VPS hosts, was bought by Akamai and now runs as Akamai Cloud. Compute comes in three families: Shared CPU (from $5 for the 1 GB Nanode), Dedicated CPU (from $36) and High Memory (from $60 for 24 GB RAM on dedicated cores).

Every plan bundles outbound transfer, from 1 TB on the Nanode up to 20 TB on large shared plans, and transfer pools across the account. Additional egress is $0.005 per GB in most regions, which is half DigitalOcean's rate and a small fraction of hyperscaler prices.

The pricing page lists regions across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and São Paulo, plus Jakarta with local pricing. All customers get 24/7 email and phone support. Around the servers you get managed Kubernetes (LKE), block storage, VPCs, firewalls and backups, managed from Cloud Manager, the API, CLI or Terraform. Before buying, check whether your region is one of the higher-priced local markets and budget for backups, which are not included.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Egress overage at $0.005/GB is among the lowest published by a major cloud.
  • Phone support for every customer, not only paid support tiers.
  • Many regions across four continents with the same base price in most.
  • Published plan catalog with clear hourly and monthly rates.

Limitations

  • Shared plans at a given price have similar or less RAM than DigitalOcean and far less than budget European hosts.
  • Jakarta and São Paulo prices are 20% to 40% higher than the base.
  • Backups cost extra on every plan.
  • No managed-server option: you run the operating system yourself.
