Overview

Nuxt is a Vue framework that adds file-based routing, layouts, auto-imported components and composables, useFetch and useAsyncData for data loading, server API routes and a large module ecosystem. Nuxt 4.0 arrived in July 2025 with a new project structure and a reworked data layer; minor releases since then have added features such as experimental SSR streaming and Vite 8 support in Nuxt 4.5 (July 2026).

Deployment goes through Nitro, Nuxt's server engine. The default node-server preset builds a ready-to-run server (node .output/server/index.mjs) for any Node host, PM2 or cluster mode. nuxt generate prerenders a static site with SPA fallbacks, and presets target serverless and edge platforms. Route rules let one app mix prerendered, server-rendered and client-only pages.

In July 2025 NuxtLabs, the company that stewards Nuxt and Nitro, joined Vercel. Both sides state the projects keep their MIT licence, public roadmap and open governance, and that Nitro stays vendor-neutral. For most teams the practical upshot is that one Nuxt codebase can move between hosts by changing a preset rather than rewriting server code.

§2

Pricing and plans

Nuxt and Nitro are free and MIT-licensed. After joining Vercel, NuxtLabs made Nuxt UI Pro free as part of Nuxt UI v4 (September 2025). Hosting is billed by the provider you deploy to.

§3

What it does

Nitro server engine
Builds the server for Node, static hosting, serverless or edge from one codebase using presets.
Hybrid rendering
Route rules set SSR, prerendering, client-only or cached rendering per route.
Auto-imports
Components, composables and utilities are imported automatically, with generated types.
Data fetching composables
useFetch and useAsyncData deduplicate requests and transfer server data to the client payload.
Modules
An ecosystem of modules for content, images, UI, auth and more, installable with one command.
Server routes
API endpoints live in the same project and are typed end to end.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • The default choice for full-stack Vue, with a mature module ecosystem.
  • Nitro presets make the same app deployable to Node, static or edge hosts.
  • Fast minor-release cadence with security patches for both v4 and v3 lines.
  • Official Nuxt UI component library became fully free with v4 in September 2025.

Limitations

  • Vue-only.
  • Nuxt 4 changed the default project structure and data fetching, so upgrading a Nuxt 3 app takes migration work.
  • Node server output must run with NODE_ENV=production or dependencies such as Vue Router flood logs with development warnings, per the deployment docs.
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • Vue teams building full-stack apps
  • Content sites and stores that mix static and dynamic pages
  • Projects that may move between Node, static and edge hosting

Look elsewhere if

  • React or Svelte teams
  • Tiny static sites where a simpler generator such as VitePress or Eleventy is enough

Questions

Is Nuxt owned by Vercel?

NuxtLabs, the company behind Nuxt and Nitro, joined Vercel in July 2025. Nuxt remains MIT-licensed with a public roadmap and open governance.

How do I deploy Nuxt on my own server?

Build with the default node-server preset and run node .output/server/index.mjs with NODE_ENV=production, usually behind nginx or another reverse proxy.

Can Nuxt generate a static site?

Yes. nuxt generate prerenders routes at build time and adds 200.html and 404.html SPA fallbacks for any static host.
