Overview

Akamai Ion is the web performance product of Akamai's content delivery network. You point your hostname at an Akamai edge hostname by CNAME, and Ion caches content, accelerates dynamic requests with protocol optimisations and SureRoute path selection, and applies front-end optimisations learned from real-user data. HTTP/3 is available to all Akamai delivery customers.

Ion is sold by contract, not self-serve, and prices are quoted. It comes with a 100% availability SLA. Configuration happens in Akamai Control Center's Property Manager or through APIs, with serverless edge compute available for developers.

For DNS, Akamai sells Edge DNS as a separate product: authoritative primary and secondary zones, optional DNSSEC, API and Terraform management, and a 100% uptime SLA. Shield NS53 protects on-premises DNS servers from NXDOMAIN floods. WAF and bot protection come from Akamai's separate security products.

Before buying, expect a sales-led process: you configure properties in Akamai Control Center, create edge hostnames and CNAME your site to them, and manage edge certificates for HTTPS. Mutual TLS between clients and edge servers is available in limited release. Teams without in-house CDN expertise often rely on Akamai's professional services for the initial setup.
