Type-safe SQL builder for the JVM · by Data Geekery GmbH

jOOQ

SQL-first Java library that generates classes from your database schema and lets you write type-safe SQL in Java, Kotlin or Scala; free for open-source databases, paid editions for commercial ones.

§1

Overview

jOOQ (jOOQ Object Oriented Querying) is developed by Data Geekery GmbH and is a long-standing choice for SQL-first development on the JVM. Its code generator reads your database schema and produces classes for tables, columns, routines and records; queries are then written as ctx.select(BOOK.TITLE).from(BOOK).where(...), checked by the compiler and rendered into the right SQL dialect.

jOOQ is dual-licensed. The Open Source Edition (Apache 2.0) supports the latest versions of open-source databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, H2, DuckDB, ClickHouse, Trino and YugabyteDB. Commercial editions support older database versions, add commercial databases (Express: Oracle XE, SQL Server Express, Access; Professional: all Oracle and SQL Server editions, cloud variants; Enterprise: Db2, HANA, Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Teradata and more) plus extra features, warranty and e-mail support.

Licences are counted per developer workstation, and servers are free. Monthly and yearly plans are subscriptions; the Unlimited plan is a perpetual licence with a year of upgrades. jOOQ does not call home or need a licence server.

Pricing and plans

Free tier · no card

Open Source Edition under Apache 2.0: unlimited developer and server workstations, latest versions of open-source databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, DuckDB, ClickHouse, H2 and others), no commercial databases, best-effort support.

At the limit Not stated The vendor does not say what happens at the limit, or we have not found it yet.

Plan Price What you get
Open Source Edition Free Apache 2.0; latest open-source database versions only
Express €12/mo or €99/yr Per developer workstation; adds Oracle XE, SQL Server Express and MS Access; €219 perpetual
Professional €49/mo or €399/yr Per workstation; all editions of Oracle and SQL Server, Redshift, Aurora, Azure SQL, CockroachDB; €899 perpetual
Enterprise €99/mo or €799/yr Per workstation; all commercial databases incl. Db2, HANA, Snowflake, BigQuery, Teradata; €1,799 perpetual
Volume (10+ workstations) From €3,990/yr Professional tier for 10 to 19 workstations; larger tiers and Enterprise priced higher

Prices exclude VAT and are per floating developer workstation; build, test and production servers are always free. Perpetual licences include one year of maintenance, renewable at 20% of the licence price per year. Per-edition prices come from jOOQ's licence agreement dated 31 March 2025 and the price-plans page; the download page itself renders prices with JavaScript and showed only 99 € for the default selection.

§3

What it does

Code generation
Generates typed classes for tables, columns, routines and records from your schema.
Type-safe SQL DSL
Fluent API that mirrors SQL, including window functions, CTEs, MERGE and vendor-specific syntax.
Dialect translation
The same query renders into each database's SQL; the parser can translate SQL strings between dialects.
Stored procedures
Generated wrappers for stored procedures and functions, with advanced support in paid editions.
SQL transformations
Query object model and policies (for example row-level policy support) in commercial editions.
§4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Full SQL power with compile-time checking
  • Largest dialect coverage of any JVM query builder
  • Free for commercial use on open-source databases
  • Clear per-developer pricing with free servers

Limitations

  • Commercial databases (Oracle, SQL Server beyond Express, Db2, Snowflake) require a paid licence
  • Open Source Edition supports only the latest version of each open-source database
  • Not an ORM: no change tracking or entity lifecycle
  • Code generation must be re-run whenever the schema changes
§5

Who it suits

Good for

  • JVM teams who prefer writing SQL over JPA
  • Reporting- and analytics-heavy applications
  • Enterprises on Oracle or SQL Server willing to pay per developer

Look elsewhere if

  • Teams that want an entity-centric ORM (Hibernate)
  • Hobby projects on commercial databases without budget for a licence
§6

Pricing history

  • 31 Mar 2025

    jOOQ raises high-volume licence prices

jOOQ's licence agreement dated 31 March 2025 lists higher tiered prices than the January 2023 version, e.g. Enterprise yearly for 10 to 19 workstations went from EUR 6,990 to 7,990; per-workstation prices (Express EUR 99, Professional 399, Enterprise 799 a year) are unchanged. Source ↗

Questions

Is jOOQ free?

The Open Source Edition is free under Apache 2.0 for open-source databases; commercial databases need a paid edition from €12 per developer per month.

Do I need a jOOQ licence for my servers?

No. Licences are per developer workstation; build, test and production servers are free.

jOOQ vs Hibernate?

jOOQ is SQL-first with generated types; Hibernate is an entity ORM implementing JPA. Many teams use both.
